Well, you’re certainly right about Ireland being a home of the greats – Samuel Beckett, Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw were all Irish playwrights, and the contemporary theatre scene thrives, too. Ireland’s venues are simply stunning, too – worthy homes for fantastic theatre!

In Belfast, the Lyric Theatre is the place to be. Northern Ireland’s only full-time producing theatre counts Game of Thrones’ Ciarán Hinds and Hollywood icon Liam Neeson amongst its alumni, and consistently put on exciting, powerful and diverse shows. If you fancy something a bit more luxe, head to the stunning Grand Opera House – it’s home to all of Belfast’s big-name shows!

In Dublin, the Abbey Theatre is a must visit. Established in 1904, the history of the island is deeply intertwined with the history of the Abbey, and it was the home stage to many of the twentieth century’s most famous works. Today, it’s still Ireland’s national theatre, so if you want a taste of authentic Irish drama, this is the place to be.

Dublin’s smaller theatres are also worth a look – try Smock Alley in the city centre or the Pavilion in Dun Laoghaire for something different.

In Cork, the Everyman Theatre and the Cork Arts Theatre stage exciting and diverse plays from Ireland and abroad – the Everyman is notable as it held Ireland’s first in-theatre wedding!

And in Limerick, the Millennium Theatre and the University Concert Hall play hosts to superb productions of everything from musicals to ground-breaking dramas. There’s more information here, so you’ve certainly enough to get you started – the question is, which will you visit first?
